I was recently handed the Story Box, an antique book with a 80s style mobile phone inside. The Story Box belongs to the ABC Newcastle 1223 radio station. Every weekday morning at 6am, the phone inside the box rings and a little later in the morning a radio announcer- Garth Russell- interviews the person who answered the phone. The phone is passed from community member to community member, and so stories are told by people from diverse walks of life, all located somewhere within the Hunter Valley. It’s a lovely democratic realization of the storytelling process. Here’s a recording of my interview: thanks to the ABC crew for making this happen 🙂
Speaking of democracy, Marie Antoinette enjoyed her democratic right to vote in today’s Maitland Council local election.
